History

Scenic Acres has always been a place to help people, but it has changed many hands throughout the years. Scenic Acres was formerly known as the County Poor Farm dating back to 1864. The County Poor Farm helped individuals with housing and meals. In return, the individuals on the Poor Farm would work on the farm to earn their keep.

In 1973, Clayton County merged its Mental Health Institute with the County Poor Farm and changed its name to Clayton County Care Facility. An addition was made on the Poor Farm and was able to become an 80-bed facility.

May of 1985, a terrible tornado struck and destroyed a partial of the property. Some of the residents’ room was destroyed, thus causing the facility to downsize to a 44-bed facility.

Clayton County Care Facility became privatized and changed its name to Scenic Acres in 1990. Scenic Acres is a non-profit that provides services for individuals to live and remain living in the community in a few different ways. First, Scenic Acres has a facility, rented from Clayton County, called a Residential Care Facility (RCF). This facility is a 15-bed facility and offers 24-hour care for its indviduals. To further aide more individuals, Scenic Acres has purchased six different homes in several communities: four homes in McGregor, Iowa, one home in Garnavillo, and one home in Strawberry Point, Iowa.
